Aim of Cool Chain Europe Excellence Awards
When individuals or teams work hard improve certain aspects of the cold chain, it's an honor to not just be paid for the work, but to be recognized for those achievements. The Cool Chain Europe Excellence Awards have been designed to highlight key achievements made within companies and within the cold chain industry that produce outstanding results and furthers the definition of best practice.
Now YOU have a vote! For the Cool Chain Europe 2011 Excellence Awards, online and on-site voting will take place. Before the January conference, the cool chain community at large will have a chance to vote on the 2011 Excellence Award nominees. Also on-site at the conference, conference participants will have the opportunity to review the nominees and have their vote weigh in.
The two Awards will be reviewed for:
- Demonstrated improvements in efficiency (cost cutting, improvement docs, service levels, patient safety, reduced risk, streamlined processes, etc)
- Technical content, validity, applicability and value
- Impact to company, business or organisation
- Novelty, pursuit of entrepreneurship and industry best practice
DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE OR AN ORGANISATION THAT HAS WORKED HARD TO ACHIEVE RESULTS IN LOGISTICS OR QA? NOMINATE THEM TODAY.

Best Quality, Qualification or Risk Management Project
Honourable Mention: IATA Chapter 17 Revisions - Kevin O'Donnell, IATA Working Group
Implementation of the 9th Edition of IATA Perishable Cargo Regulations Chapter 17: "Air Transport Logistics for Time- and Temperature-Sensitive Healthcare Products." The guidelines are making inroads for significant improvement and adopting a comprehensive quality management system for shipping healthcare products.

Winner: Challenging the US DOT's flight rules on lithium batteries - Henry Ames, Sensitech
Mr. Ames championed an initiative to formally change and clarify a dangerous goods ruling by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) that left unchecked, would have seriously hindered the distribution of biopharmaceuticals, potentially affect product quality, and ultimately risk patient safety.
Top Green or Environmentally Driven Initiative
Honourable Mention: Softbox
The Silverpod has been developed to be the first passive, cost effective alternative to Active ULD Systems, manufactured from 100% recyclable materials. The system has been developed to maximise the use of available air cargo space on airline skids/pallets and the robust design allows customer to re-use the systems

Winner: Entropy
To meet the tall requirements of a client, Entropy Solutions needed to find a solution to maintain ≤-20°C for a minimum of 60 hours, could not use dry ice, had to hold a minimum of 80 1-liter bottles, and the shipper had to fit in an LD3 container. They did it - plus the system is completely environmentally friendly by being 100% bio-based, non-toxic, biodegradable, re-usable and recyclable.
Best Temperature Control Logistics Project
Honourable Mention: Vaccinating remote populations - Wyeth Peru
An extensive vaccination campaign using thermal bags as a safer packaging method and using refrigerated trucks to remote places in the Peruvian Andes for children with abject poverty

Winner: The shake test to test damage by freezing; Use of cool packs to prevent freezing; WHO-PDA Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Management on Wheels - Dr Ümit Kartoglu, WHO
Dr Kartoglu has gone to great lengths to ensure temperature controlled medicines reach remote destinations around the world, including validating the easy to use 'shake test' and use of cool packs to prevent freezing. A most recent initiative, the Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Management on Wheels training, was designed by Dr Kartoglu to educate practitioners around the world.

Within the demanding environment of the pharmaceutical cold-chain there has never been a greater need for an utterly reliable, simple, passive and reusable container: especially one which can deliver at a competitive, cost-effective price.
The KryoTrans range, now in use with pharmaceutical companies all around the world, offers a powerful response to these challenges. With customers routinely reporting compliance times of 240 hours plus, even in the toughest ambient conditions, KryoTrans is building a formidable reputation for solving challenging and expensive problems.
KryoTrans stands for Quality, in respect of a tough and simple solution that delivers over and over, and Integrity, with the built-in data logger proving that the goods have arrived in compliance, again and again.
KryoTrans containers use phase-change configurations for -20, 2 - 8 and +20 requirements, with dry ice alternatives available for lower temperatures. The results of all shipments are recorded on the integral data logger, which not only records internal and external temperatures (as well as occasions upon which the container may have been opened) but also displays the internal temperature (showing highest and lowest encountered during the trip) for easy product acceptance and sign-off.
One configuration, all year round, takes the guesswork out of trip planning and simplifies inventory control; it also ensures that whether the issue is cold starting temperatures or exposure to high ambients at the destination the consignment will still be protected. The fact that one container will last upwards of three years (as will the logger, the logger battery and the PCMs) also makes a powerful contribution to environmental standards.
